Surfing the net you can always find valuable findings that explain very complicated concepts with a visual description to make them accessible. On numerous occasions I have published posts on the operation of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN , which is gradually being implemented, following the serious damage he suffered for over a year, when first activated.
At CERN is working hard to push the boundaries of the most incredible machine designed by mankind. A machine that aims at knowledge, the possibility of finding answers in the remotest limits of theoretical physics and cosmology, that explain who we are, where we started and what may be our alternatives, in this corner of the universe that no we glimpse the whole.
This part of the capacity to understand the reactions of a proton (positive charge of an atom) inside the collider. Yes, so at least some matter can infer the essential structure of the universe. That is the intrinsic beauty of this experiment at CERN, which may change our perception of reality forever.
I leave you with a video that explains in an impressive way the journey of a proton (or a "package" of protons) in the CERN accelerator. (The translation is not very good, but it is understood and appreciated the effort by scientists to carry throttle and languages all over the concepts of CERN).

A bit of non-determinism: an optimistic reflection of the future.

It is sometimes necessary, by necessity intellectual, ethical or simply hedonist, ooze reflections on what we are concerned, disorientation or inflicted doubts about our future, both individually or as a species. There are times for displays of optimism, in fact is hard not to lose his sanity to the overwhelming social and media pressure on our destination: the crisis that dominates and justifies everything, climate change, the avid human need to possess, have and want ...

In short, determinism with which it has always been justified because we are as we are as we are.

Right here, I draw the line, I refuse to accept fatalistic theories and conservatism on our fate as rare intelligent species on our planet. Despite my agnosticism activist for almost everything, there is a loophole that always leave the faith, man's ability to reinvent itself as a species, to find a way where most are dark, others, the minority, are light (excuse me the Manichean and topical picture to describe this view).

It's funny, but it is the turn of the century and especially the end of the millennium, that result in fatalistic perceptions, but the Sunrise of the third millennium of this era, so constituted by humanity, it is even more fatalistic than some thought or even imagined. I feel sorry for them but the fatalism and pessimism do not fall in my dictionary and less in these times.

A great scientist like Edward Lorenz , a physicist and climatologist, showed in the last century that determinism was an invention of men: that is a clear system of social control, invented by men and sustained by them, supported by pseudo-scientific theories, with the end of majority rule. Einstein gave us relativity and to show a new path in the universe. At first we know of what is conventionally known as the " butterfly effect ", a result that proved the same by stating that" any physical system that behaves in an irregular basis would be unpredictable. " What more beautiful to define the No Predestination.

And is that science is so beautiful, willing and open to change, non-dogmatism, to open the barriers of knowledge.

The twentieth century saw how the story ends with the Newtonian illusion of absolute space and time and inert, the Quantum Theory destroyed the Newtonian dream of a controllable measurement process, and chaos theory ended with the vision of the precibilidad deterministic Laplacian . I firmly believe that this century will expand new frontiers with the establishment of new scientific paradigms passing the General Theory of Relativity, the first steps on the determination of the baryonic matter and energy of the universe, the unification of all fields beautiful a single definition ...

I truly believe that this century has to be among the entrepreneurs in all fields, I refuse to fatalism and determinism prevailing, I refuse to see how pale withered our systems of social control. I believe in our species, the possibility to avoid what seems inevitable.

I believe, need to believe ...

The Atlas is already in action! (More on the LHC)

It is being prepared the first collision of the large detector at the LHC: ATLAS (A T A pparatu oroidal L HC S).

It has begun to operate 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Have you been to start test for the last 3 days. The control room is in full swing (see picture on the webcam this afternoon), and the whole team is at full speed to make sure they are ready (hopefully in a month) for the first beam and then proton collisions at the LHC.

What we are developing these days is the record of data on muons created in cosmic ray collisions in the atmosphere, as previous studies for which trigger inside the LHC.

ATLAS is one of the six particle detector (with ALICE, CMS, TOTEM and LHCb) of the LHC, weighs about 7,000 tonnes. and has an approximate size of 25 × 45 meters (I've always found amazing the huge machine to be used to explore the intimate world of matter. Things Heisenberg Uncertainty Principle ).

What is ATLAS?

The ATLAS detector is a multipurpose. When the beams of protons produced by the accelerator interact in the center of the detector will produce a series of particles with a wide range of energies. Rather than focus on a particular physical process, ATLAS is designed to measure the broadest possible range of energies. It is intended that, whatever process or particles, ATLAS will be able to detect and measure their properties. It is the result of the merger of several types of detectors that were used until the mid-90s at CERN, giving way to the current detection system that represents ATLAS toroidal.

ATLAS is expected to investigate new types of particles that can be detected in high energy collisions at the LHC. Some of them involve the confirmation or otherwise of the Standard Model , while others may give rise to new theories, and this is one of the biggest bets of the experiment that has a great future in the world of science. (If you want more information on the LHC, you can read my previous posts about this blog).

I leave you with the picture of the CERN Control Room:

Science in Spain does NOT need scissors ...

Honestly, every time I understand even less the way of doing politics in our country. While in Moncloa remain unaware of the virulence of our "crisis of its own" whipped within an overall framework of global economic distress, where everything will change so that nothing changes. (Perhaps someone knows of any judicial process in the OECD against one of the architects of the global crisis - not worth Madoff, head of Turkey's shift -), in opposition, not only have an anti-crisis model but are mired in a long fratricidal war with a band dressed postponed intolerable corruption.

I think once more not only deceive us, I mean the international financial authorities, but also that nobody will use this crisis to change the model. And when I say model, I do not mean capitalism (fully perpetuated in the genome of this society), I refer to the structures that sustain it, rather, the question would be to create structures, not to sustain it, but control it. With that at this stage of the "film" I'm content.

But since this struggle seems to me far, and I think that the IMF or the OECD, the powerful lobbyists and think tanks that support the system will recognize your utter failure in the monitoring and observation of it. I will not add anything more about it, I have ideas, but I doubt that will be heard or taken into account. There will be satisfied with Obama, the EU (well Merkel and Sarkozy, to be precise, are the only ones who have a voice on the current rigmarole that has become my long-desired European Union. What exists today do not recognize) and some emerging leader like Lula, occasionally giving a holder (rather than a proposal or course of action).

But what really worries me is my beloved Spain. Do any of the heroes of our country are concerned about Spain? Is it logical that the Government continue disagreeing with the official figures of ALL international agencies? and do not take a clear direction and clear about it (And please do not come with the gibberish that is a problem of not knowing how to sell the benefits of the measures taken. People are not stupid.) I will give a free solution: Of course I support incentive plans Plan-E, but having the race lost in the short term, is not worth making a bet long-term policy? Will our President envision that in addition the votes of the next electoral process is at stake is the historical development of our country:

The solution is a firm commitment to education and of course for the R + D + i.

These must be the two hallmarks of Spain's future. And it's easy to understand. Our production model: brick + Sun and Beach is dead. The first for obvious reasons and the second will remain important but not decisive, it is clear that not be the locomotive of the past. In tourism we have to focus on quality rather than quantity, especially when we bear in mind that increasingly compete for markets with lower prices and a remarkable quality (relative to the price offered) with respect to ours.

And this is the harsh reality. The stark and stubborn reality. I only hope is a bit of politics (in capital letters) and vision (which has long been lost in the national policy - are needed statesmen and not "partisan").

Snip I do not understand the R & D & I Spanish, however you want to justify ridiculous ways (if they are not hiring new investigators and projects remain at anchor, that's a cut and nothing else), ah! , and it scares me to contemplate defense budgets (those of whom the world rejoices when a cut, but that can mean just a cut in R + D + i for really, as I do not know, I reach here, but I promise to investigate this issue.)

Therefore at this stage of the game, which saw markets continue to play by their rules and "playing" with governments, the only chance of countries like ours is to change the strategy of the production model and become a specialist R + D + i applied to the industries of biotechnology, value-added services and tourism. That is our party, and that's what I expect of my elected representatives. But unfortunately in Moncloa not realize (and this pains me enough) and the opposition only has to read the litany of atrocities they generate in their environment and the distress they cause in an attempt to destabilize the government and the feeling that "end times is near."

Will we ever have a proactive Parliament to the real needs of citizens, or continue giving priority to party politics? I fear that the reduction of R + D + i is a victim of this type of short-term vision of politics.

The LHC will be activated in November

According to an official statement from the press office of CERN , dated August 9, the LHC will start next November, on a day to be determined.

The LHC was launched last September 2008 and suffered a malfunction in one of its superconducting cooling prevented the optimal level for entry into service. Much has been said (pejoratively) on this ignorance, as we know it is too daring. But suffice it to note that among the design, development and implementation of the multidisciplinary and international project of its kind, has been almost two decades. Has been started without any inconvenience, despite the multiple testing to which he was subjected, had broken several chances against the given result.

That said, the CERN is clear that the LHC will start with low power. The day they turn on "only" 3.5 TeV will (remember that is designed to operate at energies above 150 TeV) to be "learning" how the collider and to avoid excessive fatigue to the new machinery, with so that both the LHC as engineers and scientists are learning together. This has been revised to 10,000 superconductors by the appliance which are responsible for the LHC at temperatures near absolute 0 (-273 ° K), hence the time and there has been little information about it to avoid creating unnecessary controversial.

I remind you that during its implementation was speculated by a patulea of "scientific salon" on the possibility that the LHC could develop a black hole destroying the planet, all truffled with the premiere of the movie Angels and Demons , which confuses the public with an element such as the dark matter (antimatter in the film), truffled your search by CERN of the so-called Higgs boson , which is internationally known as the God particle. (This is a special particle that would help to understand certain loopholes in the current FísicaTeórica, especially in the field of quantum chromodynamics - I pledge to do a post about this interesting topic.)

As you can imagine pure science and marketing (whether positive or negative) are not what they say a good couple. However, according to Rolf Heuer, Director General of CERN are going to take your time to be developing a progressive and effective work. In 2010, the LHC will not work when power is greater than 7 TeV and includes a check off for anomalies prior to its greatest challenges.
